Requiem
Today
The ayes float in the air
Not enough to counteract the nays.
There they float
Ayes and nays
For all to see.
In 2020, some 244 years after
The valiant, the stalwart, the brave founders
Who ushered in Democracy,
Whose names we know and
Honor still today.
Whose ideals we once strived to uphold
And looked to for guidance.
Taking pride in the Rule of Law
In our Constitution
In being the shining city.
In our openness
In our respect for truth and goodness.
Ideals that began today to fade
In the wake of all those nays.
Today
The craven 51
Who will live now in infamy,
Their names stained and tarnished,
Ushered in Democracy’s demise.
Or maybe just hastened it along.
Tormented and twisted reasoning
To justify their stance.
Today
All that is left is, in a line from another . . .
All that is left is to Cry,
Cry, the Beloved Country.
Tomorrow though
We’ll look to the long arc of history.
And the wisdom of our middle.
And the hope that springs eternal.
That all will come right.
We will see yet again,
Another shining time
Of reaching to be better.
Of carrying through
Of holding on to
The gifts of our founders.
And honoring truth and respecting right.
And carrying on and living our lives
With honor.

Tristesse . . . After the Republicans in the Senate -Impeachment Trial of President Trump voted to refuse to allow witnesses to testify . . . despite a majority of Americans wanting to hear witness testimony. Their position, yes he did it, yes it rises to the level of Impeachment, we don’t want to hear anymore, we’re not going to find him guilty.
